Joseph Brimberry was born during 1814 in the Illinois Territory, probably in present day Marion or Washington Counties. His parents were Jacob and Jane Cunningham. While still a child his parents moved to Crawford County, Illinois. They lived in the Richwood area of what is now Crawford County.

The following year Joseph's father Jacob made a river raft and filled it with things for his brothers in Louisana. He went down the river and never returned. Jane waited for five years for him to return before she filed for divorce. She then married Blanton Brashears.

In the meantime her children were placed in different families. Joseph was taken in by the William Fuller family.

Joseph eventually married Nancy J. Jones in 1857 and set up housekeeping where Jacob had settled. This marriage produced:

1) Jane, who married W.S. Martin.

2) John, who went to Idaho and married Eliza Harriet Jones,

and 3) Mary Elizabeth, who married a Smith in Idaho.

A smallpox outbreak in November of 1865 killed both Joseph and his wife Nancy. According to Joseph's probate records, both are buried in the Lackey cemetery.
