"Muncie - Arvie M. Beckley Collins, 96, longtime Muncie resident, died 13 Dec 2003 at the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren after an extended illness.
She was born in Parker City graduated in 1926 from Parker High School, and was a member of the girls' basketball team. She attended Ball State Teacher's College, graduating in 1928 with a 2-year Primary Certificate. She taught in Farmland and DeSoto Elementary Schools for 25 years until retiring in 1960. She remained in contact with many of her former students.
Her love of children is a description of who she was. She taught children at High Street United Methodist Church for many years. After moving into the United Methodist Memorial Home in Warren in the late 1980s, she helped children with their reading at the Salamonie Elementary School.
Arvie loved I.U. Basketball. She followed the games by radio and television, sometimes staying up late and missing breakfast the next morning. Her room was decorated in red and white with team posters, pillows, blankets, stuffed bears, etc., showing her support of the team. She was an avid reader, enjoying mysteries by Agatha Christie, and also telling stories to children using her Bible. Mrs. Collins was a member of the High Street United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women and the Harrington Sunday School Class. She was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Ladies Auxiliary 219 since 1948, and the Indiana State Teachers Association.
Surviving are her son, James W. Beckley (wife: Jo Ann), Muncie; three granddaughters, Maria, Luisa and Ariana; five great-grandchildren. She ws preceded in death by her husbands, Wilfred Beckley and Marley 'Mark' Collins; her parents, Melville and Nora E. Clark Mull, and a brother Clark Mull. Burial was in Gardens of Memory Cemetery."
