For ten seasons (1963 to 1972), he played at the right-safety position in the American and National Football Leagues with the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos. He attended Lincoln High School in Cleveland and played collegiate football at Michigan State University. While with the Spartans, he distinguished himself as a two-way player excelling at both the defensive back and fullback positions. In 1961, he earned team MVP honors while achieving All-American recognition. Saimes was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs during the 1963 AFL Draft however, he would end up with Buffalo and during his years there (1963-1969) he made significant contributions to two Bills' AFL Championships (1964 and 1965). Individually, Saimes earned Pro-Bowl honors five consecutive years (1964 to 1968) and was named First-Team All Pro three times (1964, 1965 and 1967). He totaled 22 interceptions for 238 yards. After retiring as a player, he went onto become a well-respected NFL scout with the Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans. Saimes was named to the Bills' Wall of Fame in 2000 and was chosen as part of Buffalo's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. Additionally, he was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-Time AFL Team.
