In 1888 Emma took a trip to Port Angeles with a girlfriend who was going there to visit a sister. Finding life in a pioneer settlement appealing, she decided to stay. She taught school for two years and also took part in the first teachers' institute there in 1890. She collected the funds for purchase of the old Central School bell. Most of her married life was spent at the Chambers homestead, on Mount Angeles Road, which is now a landmark.
