Christine Harris Carter, daughter of Mont Washington Harris and Ruby Lewallen Harris, was born in Coxton, Harlan County, Kentucky on August 2, 1930. She and her twin sister were the first of nine children.

When she was about seven years old, the family relocated to Boone County, West Virginia, where she and her brothers and sisters were raised.

When she was in the 9th grade, she left school and began working at the General Store in Wharton. A few years later she moved to Charleston and worked for Valley Bell.

Her father, having spent most of his adult life working in the coal mines, passed away at the early age of 50 on February 22, 1953.

Later, Christine relocated to Bridgeton, New Jersey, where she was employed at Owens Illinois glass plant. Here, in Bridgeton, she was married to John Clayton Carter on January 11, 1958. To this union, two sons were born.

After brief residences in Dover, Delaware, Long Beach, California, and Milton-Freewater, Oregon, she and her new family settled in Riverside, California, residing there until 1971.

In 1969, she was pre-deceased by one brother, Odell Harris.

In 1971, she and her family relocated to Raton, New Mexico, where she lived until 1989, with periodic visits to Tonopah, Arizona.

In 1990, she returned to her heart-felt home, Boone County, West Virginia, where she spent her remaining years, sharing a home with her mother.

In 1993, she was blessed with a grandson, whom she cherished deeply, and enjoyed visiting every summer.

She leaves to mourn her loss: her mother, Ruby Harris of Barrett, WV; two sons: John C. Carter of St. Petersburg, FL, and Jim C. Carter of Huntington Beach, CA; five brothers: Cardell Harris of Letart, WV, Eudell Harris of Barrett, WV, Bredell Harris of Pen Argyl, PA, Mondell Harris of Barrett, WV, and Credell Harris of Barrett, WV; two sisters: her twin Irene Smith of Midlothian, VA, and Sonja Harris of Bim, WV; one grandson: Cameron J. Carter of Huntington Beach, CA; one daughter-in-law, two step-grandchildren, several brothers- and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Under Mountains Green

One of nine
Born from the mine
Black coal under mountains green.
Back in that time
How hard the climb
To prosperity's distant gleam.

Your father earns
Your mother churns
Your family learns life's hard-fought scheme.
Whether strong or tall
How young they fall
The men who work the seam.

As years passed by
Under far-off skies
You dreamed of mountains green.
But lived in town
Near hills of brown
And accepted fate's decree.

Two sons you raised
With words of praise
For every goal achieved.
And proud they burn
For all they've learned
From their mother's qualities.

Your sad blue eyes
Like cloudy skies
Some wonder what they've seen.
For although they shine
In happy times
The past was often mean.

A lifetime endured
But not a cure
For a tiny pointless sting.
No more laughter
No more tears
No more cardinals sing.

In Winter's time
The sun does shine
A little less, but still is seen.
When leaves are brown
Or snow falls down
Look close, and still find green.

Beside your father, brother
And space for your mother
With grass grown in between
As you lay down
In hallowed ground
Forever will you dream
........under Mountains Green.
