In 1808, during the French invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, with the rank of Brigadier was commissioned as Plenipotentiary of the legitimate government of Spain by the Supreme Junta of Seville for the proclamation of King Ferdinand VII in the Viceroyalty of Peru. Later he was appointed Captain General and President of the Royal Audience of Cuzco. In 1809 he assumed command of the royalist armies in Upper Peru Peruvians, defeating the River Plate's revolutionary forces in the famous battles of La Paz, Guaqui, Cochabamba, Sipe-Sipe, Chuquisaca and others that recovering Spanish rule throughout the territory. His victory in the famous and decisive battle of Guaqui (or Desaguadero) in 1811 earned him the award of the title of First Count of Guaqui, and after he receive decoration of Grandee of Spain of First Class. In 1813 he resigned as Commander in Chief and returned to Spain. In 1813 he resigned as Commander in Chief and returned to Spain, where he was appointed Lieutenant General of the Royal Army, Member of the Board of War of Indias, Member of the Board of War and Chairman of Board Trade Agreement from Overseas. Later he was elected Member of Parliament for Arequipa and named after King Fernando VII his Gentleman of the Bedchamber with Exercise and Servitude and Knight of the Order of Santiago. Also held the positions of Honorary Councillor of State, Senator for Life, hero of the Kingdom, Perpetual Regidor of Cadiz, Commissioner of Spanish Bank of San Fernando. Throughout his life he was awarded, among others, with the Great Cross of Isabel the Catholic, Carlos III, San Hermenegildo, San Fernando and the Grand Cross of Commander of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great.
