Laura was born in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts on November 28, 1836. According to her obituary, Laura moved with her family to Vermont in 1843.
Laura graduated (1853 or 1854) from the Hinesburg Academy located in Hinesburg (Chittenden County) Vermont. She was listed as a member of the Hinesburg Literary Society at age 20 in March, 1857 according to records found in the Hinesburh town library. She later became a primary school teacher in the Fulton and Franklin County, Illinois schools.
Laura married James Agard Nay in Franklin Grove (Lee County), Illinois on February 25, 1867 by Alexander Morrison according to their marriage certificate. In 1884, Laura and James settled in Brown County, Nebraska.
Her husband died in February, 1900. Rather than being dependent upon others to survive, Laura began serving as postmistress in Long Pine in 1900 at the age of 63. She retired in 1909 according to her Long Pine Journal Newspaper obituary dated May 14, 1909. She was also a member of the Eastern Star for many years according to that same obituary.
Laura died on May 7, 1909 at the age of 72 years, 5 months, and 9 days of age.
