Death: Aug. 24, 1859

Peruvian military and politician who served for Spanish government during the wars for South American independence. Born Juan Pío de Tristán y Moscoso, during his childhood he moved with his family to Spain where he completed his studies and continued his military career, and he fought against the French in the Roussillon and in the War of the Convention from 1793 to 1795. In the late eighteenth century he returned to America and spent two years in Buenos Aires, as assistant viceroy of Río de la Plata, Pedro de Melo. In 1808 he was elected Mayor of Arequipa, in 1809 he joined the army to quell a rebellion against Spanish rule and also participated in the defense of territories of Upper Perú (today Bolivia) which had been taken by the revolutionaries of the Río de la Plata (today Argentina). He also commanded troops in the battles of Huaqui (1811), Tucumán (1812) and Salta (1813) where he was taken prisoner along with several other officers. In 1814 he was appointed interim Viceroy,-after the fall and capture of the Viceroy La Serna in the Battle of Ayacucho-, for being the highest realistic military graduation, but never exercised his duties, since he delegated its functions to the independentists. After adopting ideas for independence, he served as Prefect and Commander General of Arequipa, Minister of War and Navy, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation and Provisional President of the South-Peruvian State from 1838 to 1839. He was the last Spanish Viceroy of Perú.
