James, a farmer, was the son of Ruth Regester.

James was mustered into Federal service at 18 years old in the 10th West Virginia Infantry at Beverley, Nov. 15th, 1861. He was wounded in action (his elbow) on July 24th, 1864, near Winchester Va. on the first day of battle during the 2rd Battle of Kernstown. He was mustered out of service June 24, 1865. National Archives records confirm these dates.

He married Susan Oldaker (1848-1924) on March 26, 1867. Less than three months after her death, James married Fannie Myrtle Golden, who was 31 years his junior. He was 76 and she was 45 when they were married on October 20th, 1924.

James died on June 6, 1933, of arteriosclerosis, cardiac hypertrophy and chronic nephritis. Fannie eventually remarried after his death to a Wolfe and died at age 86 on Oct 31, 1966. Fannie is buried at the Fraternal Cemetery in Belington, WV.
