Capt. James Dowler was born in Ireland, and as a lad was taken to England by his father, a guardsman in the British Reserves. On coming to the U.S., Capt. James Dowler first located in New York City, where he remained for 2 years, at the end of that time coming to Clearfield county, Pa., where he was engaged in lumbering and farming up to the time of his death, in 1904.
James Dowler was elected Captain, who retained the command during the 7 year's service. The State furnished the arms (the old flint lock) and tents, and the company was attached to the 5th Brigade Pennsylvania Volunteers, composed of the counties of Clearfield, Centre, Clinton, Union and Mifflin.
He married Cornelia Patton, who was born in Center County, Pa., and she died in 1907, the mother of 10 children, as follows: William, now deceased, who was a physician and surgeon of Patton, Pa.; Susanna (#121520830), wife of James Martin, living on the old homestead in Clearfield county; John, residing at Burnside,Clearfield Co; Elizabeth, also a resident of Burnside; James, who lives in West Virginia; Josephine, wife of Ellery Hartshorn, of Texas; Harry Patton; and 3 who are deceased.
Capt. James Dowler of Burnside died on August 17 as a result of an injury received a week previous when he was struck by a horse, while crossing the street near his home. Mr. Dowler was born in Ireland in 1826 and was brought to America when quite young. Four sons and 3 daughters survive him. The funeral was held at the Burnside Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday. Interment was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery near that place.
