Mrs. Stewart was born in Edgefield, a daughter of the late George Rupert and Leila Flinn Mayson. She was a 1931 magna cum laude graduate of Winthrop College, and did post-graduate study at the University of South Carolina. She retired from teaching in public and private schools in South Carolina, was an adult education instructor and helped organize the first literacy program in Lake City. Mrs. Stewart was also a librarian at the Lake City Public Library. She was a member of Lake City United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and leader in the United Methodist Women.
