John Smith, one of the aged veterans of the Civil War and a resident of the city for more than 30 years, died at his home at 76 Hopkins St., about 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon after a brief illness of pneumonia. Mr. Smith was 79 years of age. Funeral services were held from the late home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, the Rev. Livingston, pastor of the Central Christian Church officiating. The grand Army took charge of the burial Mr. Smith was well known in Kankakee County where he had resided for many years. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted from Aroma Township and served his country from 1862 until he was honorably discharged at the end of the conflict. He was a member of Whipple post G. A. R. Mr. Smith is survived by one child, Louis Smith of Elgin a daughter, Mrs. Anna Hansen died in the city about 4:30 o'clock this morning. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother. - Kankakee Daily Republican, June 5, 1911.
