Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Grumo Appula near Bari, he was ordained a priest on September 28, 1947 in the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Grumo Appula. After earning a doctorate in Theology and in Canon Law in Rome, he joined of the Secretariat of State of the Holy See in 1958. He served in the Secretariat of State of the Holy See until 1962 in the then Department for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs as a collaborator of the Pro-Secretary of State, Monsignor Domenico Tardini. After the death of Tardini, he carried out his work at the diplomatic missions of the Holy See in the United States of America for five and a half years and in India for other five years. On 6 December 1974, he was elected by Pope Paul VI, Titular Archbishop of Tronto and at the same time appointed first Apostolic Nuncio in Mozambique. On 9 February 1975, he was ordained a bishop in the Cathedral of Bari by Archbishop of Naples. In the 80s, he was Apostolic Nuncio in Zimbabwe, Yugoslavia and Poland, where he was Apostolic Nuncio with special responsibilities and Head of the Delegation of the Holy See for permanent working contacts with Poland. On 15 March 1990, he was appointed official representative of the Holy See in the Soviet Union. The four years of his diplomatic service in Moscow were of vital importance not only for relations with the Holy See, but also for the revival of the Catholic Church after the long persecution in the areas that were once part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. On 12 November 1994, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Italy and the following year Apostolic Nuncio in the Republic of San Marino. Colasuonno was made ​​a cardinal in the consistory of 21 February 1998 by Pope John Paul II, and after three days was awarded the title of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. After his passing at age seventy-eight, he was buried in the church of his native city according to his last will. (bio by: Ruggero)
