CIVIC LEADER DIES SUDDENLY
A prominent civic leader since he moved here 10 years ago, J. Herman Bjornstad, 60, for many years president of the Lemon Grove chamber of commerce, died of a heart attack today in his home at 101 Pacific Ave.
Mr. Bjornstad who engaged in the lumber business here prior to his retirement, appeared in good health yestereday when he attended the weekly Men's Club luncheon, but he became ill in the night. He was chairman of the business development committee, and was former president of the County Development Federation.
Born in St. Paul, Minn, Dec. 21, 1878, Mr. Bjornstad came to San Diego in 1911 and was in the lumber business in East San Diego and in North Park, San Diego. He was a charter member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in San Diego where services will be held Friday afternoon at 2.
Mr. Bjornstad was a former president of the North Park Business Men's Association and a member of the Highway 94 Association, the Lemon Grove Men's Club and the San Diego Highway Development Association.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dagmar A. Bjornstad; two daughters, Marjorie Arnold and Ruth H. Bjornstad; a grandson, David Arnold, his mother, Mrs. Anna Bjornstad; five sisters, Ruth Steinwedell, Alice Fry, Hilda Bethke, Clara Freng and Dorthy Kluge, and a brother, Bernard Bjornstad.
