(The Herald Statesman, Yonkers, NY., Thursday January 4, 1940}: Rites Tomorrow for Dr. Harold, Noted Chemist, Inventor, Teacher is Dead at 65 - Served on Reparations Body. Dr. Joseph F. X. Harold of 16 Brewster Avenue, textile consultant for the William M. Grosvenor Laboratories, Inc., New York City, and well known as an inventor, teacher, and author, died yesterday at the New York Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled after a long illness. He was sixty-five. Dr. Harold was born in Philadelphia, the son of Frances and Mary Gowan Harold. He received his B.A. degree from La Salle College and his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He also studied at the Philadelphia Textile School and in Germany.
He came to Yonkers in 1921. He was past president of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists and treasurer of the New York Chemists' Club. Dr. Harold was well known as an expert in the field of textile chemistry, and was called upon to testify in court cases. He also obtained patents for many of his inventions. After the World War, he was sent to Europe by the United States Government as Reparations Commissioner for the War Trade Board of the Department of State. He joined the Grosvenor Laboratories 28 years ago.
A solemn high mass of requiem will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 A.M. at the Church of St. John the Baptist, and the funeral will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
