Pauline C. Schaal, age 103 of Burlington, passed away Friday, March 4, 2005 at Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington. Pauline was born Dec. 29, 1901 at Yale; to Christ and Christina (Strobel) Gramm. She was one of eight children. When she was five years old her family moved to a homestead north of Bethune, in what was known as "The settlement."
She attended the Union School in the Settlement through the 6th grade. She was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran Church and confirmed in the Hope Congregational Church. Pauline married Emil Schaal in Oct. 27, 1921 by Rev. Karl H. Hammelman at Hope Congregational Church. To this union six sons and two daughters were born. Emil and Pauline resided in the settlement until 1928 when they moved to a farm seven miles north and east of Burlington. They lived there until 1946 when they moved four miles north where they bought 160 acres of unimproved land and had to build up from the beginning.
They lived there until 1952 when, they moved to Burlington and there Emil passed away in 1970. In 1991 Pauline moved to the Burlington Care Center where she lived for 12 years. In 2003 she moved to Grace Manor Care Center until the time of her passing.
Pauline worked in the lunchroom at the Burlington school in 1953-54. She was a member of Hope Congregational Church north of Bethune where she was active in the Ladies Aide. She also enjoyed piecing quilts from the time she was fourteen years old and made countless quilts (over 150). Through the drought she maintained and cultivated a large garden, canned vegetables and meat. She made noodles and baked countless loaves of bread for her families.
Pauline was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Emil; three daughters-in-law, Donna, Evelyn and Helen; two sons-in-law, Ruben Anderson and Harold Stover; three step-grandchildren; five brothers, Jake, Gottlieb, Christ Jr., William and John. Also preceding her in death were two sisters Elizabeth (John) Schaal and Pauline at the age of five.
Pauline is survived by six sons; Cliff Schaal of Burlington, Elmer Schaal of Burlington, Leo Schaal of Burlington, Milton and wife Carol Schaal of Sioux Falls, S.D., Louis and wife Connie Schaal of Olathe, and Dalwon and wife Reta Schaal of Burlington. Two daughters, Viola Stover of Burlington, Dolores and husband Elmer of Burlington. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Hope Congregational Church north of Bethune. Burial followed in the Hope Congregational Church cemetery. Visitation was held Monday, March 7, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Love Funeral Home in Burlington. Memorials are suggested to: Hope Congregational Church of Bethune, 40981 County Rd.
