| Birth: | Sep. 11, 1810 Milton Northumberland County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | Apr. 19, 1890 Lock Haven Clinton County Pennsylvania, USA |  13th Governor of Pennsylvania, 1855-58; US Congressman. While in Congress, he urged the support of the transcontinental railroad and, as a friend of Samuel F.B. Morse, the construction of a telegraph line. The legislative act that would lead to the creation of the Pennsylvania State University was passed under his tenure. President Lincoln appointed him director of the Philadelphia Mint in 1861 and he served in the position until 1873. From 1873 to 1879 he was elevated to superintendent of the Mint after it became part of the Treasury Department. It was under his suggestion while leading the Mint that the motto "In God We Trust" was first placed on American coinage.
