Hans John Derner, 68, of 716 169th St., Hammond, retired assistant superintendent of equipment for the New York Central System and Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, died Wednesday in St. Margaret Hospital. Surviving him are his wife, Elise; two sons, William of Wycoff, N.J., and Cecil of Sewickley, Pa.; five grandchildren; a brother Harry of Arcadia and Cecil of Sewickley; and two nieces. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Immanuel United Church of Christ. Masonic graveside services will be conducted by Garfield Lodge 569 with the Rev. Paul Schaeffer officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Mr. Derner had lived in Hammond 56 years. He belonged to Masonic Garfield Lodge 569, South Bend Consistory, Hammond Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Abbey Chapter 378, New York Central Square Club, Orak Shrine, National Assn. Retired Veterans Railway Employees, Sportsman Club. He was a past president of the Immanuel United Church of Christ where he was also Sunday School Superintendent. In World War II he served on the war rationing board.
