[The location of the Sneed family cemetery is no longer known and there was likely more than one. This large family lived and farmed near Elamsville, Patrick Co., VA.]

John was probably born about 1745, assuming he was about age 25 when he was married.

He married Nancy Murrell about 1770, judging by the age of their eldest child who was born in 1771. They were likely married in Lunenberg Co., VA where Nancy's, and perhaps John's, family was living. The birth dates of their children as given below have been published in several genealogies as coming from a family bible and correspond well with other records.

8 Oct 1771, VA - John and Nancy's first known child, William Murrell Sneed, was born.

31 Aug 1773, VA - their twins Martha and Richard were born.

15 Jan 1776, VA - son Thomas was born.

31 Aug 1778, VA - son Smith was born.

20 Feb 1781, VA - son John Jr. was born.

1781 – The first definite record of our John Sneed shows his service in the American Revolution when he served in James Poteet's Company from the Henry County militia. They marched to the aid of General Nathaniel Green at the Battle of Guilford Court House in North Carolina, but the fighting was over by the time they got there and they were sent back home:

[Source: History of Patrick Co., VA by Pedigo, 1933.]
"Now follows the list of those with Colonel Penn who marched to the assistance Colonel Green at Guilford Court House on March 11,1781:
Abraham Penn, Colonel, Commanding
James Poteet's company -
James Poteet, Commander: Peter Bays, Ninon Prater, Ben Hubbard, John Ratford, John Sneed, Joseph street, Stephen Watkins, Thomas Tinson, George Nevil, Peter Tittle, Charles Hibbert, Joseph Perregoy, Richard Dotson, William Elliot, John Mullins, Ambrose Mullins, Joseph Waldin, Acquilla Black."

1782, Henry Co., VA - John was listed as a property owner:

1782 Henry County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List:
John Snead; one tithe (white male of working age); no slaves; two horses; thirteen cattle

John and Nancy bought 200 acres that same year:

23 Jul 1782, Henry Co., VA Deeds, pp. 226-227. "George Hairston of Henry Co., VA, sells to John Sneed 200 acres on Joincrack Creek. Mentions executors of Daniel Ryan. Through Adjoins William Ratlif, Darby Ryan (dec'd), and James Edwards line. Benjamin Hubbard and Ward's line."

23 Nov 1783, Henry Co., VA - daughter Judith was born.

1784, they bought another 154 acres from Benjamin Murrell who was originally from Lunenberg Co., VA and was probably some relation of Nancy's:

13 May 1784 [Benjamin] Murrell to John Sneed 154 acres on Beard's Creek land deed Henry Co, Virginia.

1785 - the part of Henry County that John and Nancy lived in was split off into the new Franklin County, where they were listed on the tax list the next year:

1786 Franklin Co., VA tax list:

One tithable

Aug 1786 - John Sneed was appointed Franklin Co., VA road surveyor.

1806 – John witnessed the will of William Robertson.

1 Nov 1808, Franklin Co., VA - daughter Jane was married. Father John Sneed consents.

1810 seems to be the year that John and Nancy moved across the line into Patrick Co., VA as they were first listed on the census in Franklin Co., VA and then later that same year paid tax as residents of Patrick county. However, the John in Patrick County may have been John Jr.:

This mentions of John Sneed in Patrick Co., VA may have been either John Sr. or his son John Jr., although John Jr. seems most likely:

1814 Patrick Co., VA estate of Robert Wright. William Sneed mentioned. Inventory by William Sneed 1809. Settlement of account with James Turner and his father Francis's account. Signed William Hancock, John Hall, John Sneed.

1815 July 22 - Patrick Co, VA Will Bk 1:276
Estate of BENNETT HOUCHINS deceased - Inventory taken by Jeremiah Burnett, Isaac Adams & John Sneed. "1 note on William Burnett."

4 Aug 1815 - John made his will in Patrick Co, VA in which he leaves token bequests to his children and the rest of the estate to Nancy. His brothers? James and Abraham Sneed were witnesses. [James may have been his grandson, the son of William. This James would have been about twenty.] The will was proved at the Oct 1815 session of the Patrick County court, showing that he had died by that time. His son youngest son Samuel was married in Patrick Co., VA 15 Sep 1815, but it's hard to guess whether he would have married while his father was sick or waited until after he had died. The inventory of John's estate in December shows that either John or Nancy lent Samuel a considerable amount of (probably) furniture and tools with which to start married life.

"In the name of God, amen. This fourth day Aug. in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred fifteen.

Job Carter's obituary published in the SEYMOUR TIMES, 28 Apr 1859:
"Died at his residence, five miles south of this place, on the 23d inst. Mr. Job Carter, aged 76 years, 1 month and 7 days. Mr. Carter was one of the pioneers of this county and State. He was born in Stafford county, Virginia, on the 16th of March, 1784, and was married to Miss Gincy Sneed in October, 1808. The couple resided some time in Patrick county, Virginia, from whence they removed to Clark's Grant (now Clark county, Indiana,) in January of the year 1814. In 1817 they removed to Jennings county, Indiana, and in March of the same year to this county where they have lived together until the day of his death. They had 13 children--8 sons and 5 daughters. The eldest, a daughter, is now 49 and the youngest, a son, 25 years of age. One son and one daughter have died. Of the others two live in Jeffersonville, one in Iowa and the remaining eight in this county. Mr. Carter had 55 grand children and 9 great grand children. He was an honest, benevolent, kind hearted man, and lived and died beloved by his family and honored and respected by all who knew him. In early life Mr. C. bore his full share of the hardships, perils and privations endured by the early settlers of our State, who are now rapidly disappearing from among us."

Gincy Sneed Carter's obituary published in the SEYMOUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, Tues,
22 Jul 1884, pg 4:
"Gincy Carter was born in Stafford county, Virginia, October 14th,
1788; was married to John Carter in Virginia Nov. 8th, 1808. They came to Indiana Territory in 1812, traveling all the way in a wagon. They settled first on Silver Creek, in Clark's grant, now Clark county. In 1816 they moved to Jennings county and lived there one year. In the early part of 1817 they came to Jackson county and settled in Grassy Fork township. They continued their residence in Jackson county until April 23d, 1859, when Mr. Carter died. They had lived together 50 years, 5 months and 15 days. After the death of her husband Mrs. Carter remained at their last home on Chestnut Ridge, in Jackson county, until the fall of 1866, when she went to live with Hardin H. Carter, and moved with him to Jennings county Dec. 15th, 1875, where she made her home until her death--July 4th, 1884. Mrs. Carter had been an acceptable and constant member of the Baptist church for more than 65 years; was baptized in Coffee creek in Jennings county, by Thomas Hill, sr.
She was quite feeble for several of the last years of her life, and required constant and tender care. For several months before her death, she was unable to recognize her friends or her own children, except those who had been constantly with her. She often expressed a wish to die, saying she could do no further good in this life for herself or any one else and that she was ready and prepared for a better life in a better world. She was 95 years and 9 months old. It was her preference to live with H. H. Carter, and I should fail of justice if I did not say that during all of her stay in his house she received the most unremitting care and attention from him and his wife, and during her last months of affliction she received from Mrs. H. H. Carter such kind attention as comes only from a faithful, loving Christian heart. Her only loving daughter, Elizabeth Keller, was also with her during her last days and gave such
help and comfort as was possible under the circumstances. Mrs. Carter's remains were buried on Chestnut Ridge beside her husband, July 15, 1884. P. L. C."

John Snead
One tithable
One white male over 21

Five cattle
