Mrs. Doris Crowe Hughes, 83, of Mahan Rd., Summerville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 at her residence.

Mrs. Hughes was born May 5, 1928 in Mentone, Ala. to the late Finn M. and Belle Keith Crowe. She was retired from Best Mfg. in Menlo, Ga. Mrs. Hughes was a faithful member of New Antioch Baptist Church in Summerville and currently still served as the church organist.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest G. Hughes, five brothers – Rev. Finn Crowe, Rev. Floyd Crowe, Rev. Charles Crowe, Rev. Edmond Crowe, and Edward Crowe, two sisters – Lorena Crowe Simmons and Marie Crowe Pope, and an infant great-grandson - Jonathan Nathaniel Hughes.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by one daughter and son-in-law – Shirley and Will Marks of Summerville, four sons and daughters-in-law – Everett and Nancy Hughes, Fayetteville, Alton and Nancy Hughes – Milledgeville, and Mike and Martha Hughes and Robert and Cindy Hughes, all of Summerville, seventeen grandchildren and thirty great-grand children. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Hughes will lie in state in the Chapel of Erwin Petitt Funeral Home Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 from 6pm until 9 pm. At other times the family will receive friends at the home of Robert and Cindy Hughes at 1150 Mahan Rd., Summerville.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 at 12:00 pm at New Antioch Baptist Church in Summerville with the Rev. Harold Helton, Rev. Waydell Howell and Rev. Wayne Pace officiating. There will be an open viewing at the church from 11:00am until 12:00 noon. Interment will be in Greenhill Memory Gardens.

Active pallbearers are Jonathan Hughes, Kyle Boston, Jim Crowe, Donald Blackwell, James Hughes, Freddie Hughes, Larry Wells and Doug Shireman. Honorary pallbearers are all of the other men of New Antioch Baptist Church.
