Schuyler Saunders went to California for the 1849 Gold Rush. From there he traveled north to Portland Oregon where he met and married Eliza Tynan in 1851.

They were the first homesteaders on the land that later became the town of Chehalis. Elizabeth and Schuyler may have divorced in 1859. Eliza received half of their claim.

Schuyler died at Jackson Prairie while travelling on business. In 1953 local elders discovered his marker was missing, although they recalled seeing it in this cemetery many years before.
