HARTFORD CITY -- Bernard Elmere Cox, 96, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Friday in the home of his grandson, Kevin, from complications of a long illness.
He had lived the past 72 years in Hartford City, moving from Marion. He was born in Washington Township to the late Eber and Edna (Bradford) Cox. He married Ruth Barley on June 28, 1928, in Marion. She died March 22, 1996.
Mr. Cox had attended the Oak Chapel United Methodist Church in Grant County. He retired from St. Joe Container Company in 1973 after 27 years. Bernard's hobbies were woodworking and farming.
Surviving are grandchildren, Michael, Marty and Mark Ely, Kelly Neuville, Greg, Kevin and Jeff Cox and Wendy Ritchie; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He also was preceded in death by sons, Donald J. and Robert D. Cox; daughter, Barbara R. (Cox) Ely; brothers, Maynard and Wilmer Cox; and a sister, Helen Martin.
Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Keplinger Funeral Home, 509 N. High St. Interment is in Gardens of Memory cemetery, Muncie. Pallbearers are Michael, Mark and Marty Ely, Kevin, Greg and Jeff Cox and Tim Neuville.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m Monday and from noon until services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the funeral home for funeral expenses.
