She was the daughter of Isaac Cox and Susannah Tomlinson. The family can be traced from Virginia to the area known as New Sweden on the Delaware River between PA and NJ. It can be traced to 1600 in Sweden.

Margaret was the widow of Thomas Lockhart who was killed in the Rev War. On 2 July 1783 in Rockbridge Co., VA she married Robert Everett, another Rev War Veteran. She had had one son by T. Lockhart and would bear another ten children to Robert Everett. They are: Caty, Mary, Thomas, Nancy Agnes, William, Jean, Ann, Margaret, James, and John.
