Raymond E. Webb was born in 1929 in Illinois, the son of Clarence and Annie Icenogle Webb. On Sunday, June 29, 1947, he and Phyllis Ann Offutt were married at the First Baptist Church in Murphysboro.
Raymond graduated from the Murphysboro schools and was employed as a maintenance man with Bob Grantham in West Frankfort at the time of his marriage.
In December 1955 (either the 15th or 16th), tragedy struck the Webb family when four were killed as their truck was struck by an Illinois Central passenger train. The accident occured at a private crossing off Thirteenth Street, just north of Hall Street.
The dead were Raymond Webb, 26, his wife Phyllis, 28, a daughter Sharon, 4, and a son Richard. A third child Michael, 3, was severely injured and remained in critical condition Wednesday at St. Andrew's Hospital. All four passed away within a few hours after the accident.
Two children of the family were at school at the time of the accident. They are Dennis, 7, and Barbara, 5. Also surviving are Mr. Webb's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Webb, and Mrs. Webb's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emery Woll.
