Atlantic City Police Officer Thomas McMeekin, Jr. was 28 yrs. of age when he was killed in the line of duty. He was directing traffic away from accident scene when he was struck by a bus. He was struck by the bus on March 3, 2005 and passed away the next day.
He was a five year veteran of the Atlantic City Police Force and has many relatives in the Atlantic City Police and Fire Services.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer(nee Miller) and his 2 yr. old daughter Adria Lynne. He is also survived by his father Thomas McMeekin, Sr. and his brother Andrew who is on the Atlantic City Fire Dept. His Uncle is Atlantic City Fire Captain John Mooney. His father, Thomas McMeekin, Sr. was forced to retire as a city firefighter in 1996, after he was paralyzed in a car accident.
Officer McMeekin, Jr. was born in Atlantic City and attended Our Lady Star of the Sea grade school and graduated from Holy Spirit High School in 1995.
He got his criminal justic degree at Rutgers in 1999, three years after his father's accident. Atlantic City was where he wanted to be.
Thomas, Sr. had his sons take tests for the Fire Dept. and the Police Dept. which they both passed. Andrew McMeekin, Thomas, Jr.'s brother chose to enter the Fire Dept., however, Thomas, Jr. wanted to be a police officer and he couldn't be swayed.
He was sworn into the Atlantic City Police Dept. on October 29, 2000, one day after his 24th birthday.
Officer McMeekin was a hard worker, receiving numerous commendations and being looked to as a leader on his shift. But he refused to have his family members help him through the ranks, his uncle said.
He is the second police officer to die on the job in the last year. March 10, 2004, Sgt. Ken Brown, 52, died of an apparent heart attack on the way back from breaking up a fight at an Atlantic City High School basketball game.
Thomas McMeekin, Jr. decorated St. Nicholas Church for Christmas, a job that had been Sgt. Brown's.
