The LaFayette Sun" - March 16, 1904:
Our school and the whole community were greatly shocked on learning of the sudden death of Elkanah Kitchens, son of Mr. Troy Kitchens, and one of our best school boys. He attended school regularly up to Thursday evening and had prepared his lessons thoroughly for Friday. The school especially deeply sympathize with the bereaved parents, brothers and sisters. His body was laid to rest at Lane’s Chapel cemetery Saturday at 2 o’clock p.m.
