United States Surgeon General. Born Charles Everett Koop and nicknamed "Chick" (as in chicken coop), he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1937 and Cornell University's medical school in 1941. Koop was Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. He pioneered surgery on infants, successfully separating three sets of conjoined twins and earning a national reputation when he reconstructed the chest of a baby born with its heart outside its body. In 1981 he became Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health and Human Services. In January, 1982 he became Surgeon General, serving until October, 1989. As Surgeon General Koop opposed tobacco use, abortion and homosexuality and advocated AIDS awareness, disregarding Reagan administration opposition to send an educational pamphlet to more than 100 million households, the largest public health mailing ever. After leaving office Koop served as Chairman of the National Safe Kids Campaign and an adviser to President Bill Clinton's health care reform task force. In 1999 he invested in a venture called drkoop.com. The web site was supposed to provide consumer health care information online, but went out of business in 2001 after expenses were more than revenues, and paid more than $4 million to settle investor lawsuits. He later founded the C. Everett Koop Institute at Dartmouth College, which was organized to promote health education internationally. (bio by: Bill McKern)
