Thomas J. Barritt died at his home, in Saugerties, Monday morning, September 12, after an illness of one week. The direct cause of death was prostatitis. He was operated upon by Dr. Shrady, of this city, assisted by Drs. Chlambers, Stern and Loughran, of Saugerties. It was hoped that this would save his life, but he was too weak to recover from the shock. Mr. Barritt. who was born in Poughkeepsie in 1818, was one of the best known and most highly respected business men in his section of the State.

The Publishers' Weekly, Volume 54 [No. 1393] Oct. 8, 1898:
Thomas J. Barritt, bookseller, died in Saugerties, N.Y., September 12. He was born at Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1819. At the age of thirteen he went to sea and for fourteen years made his home on sailing vessels. In 1852 he settled in Saugerties as a bookseller and stationer. He was actively engaged in business up to the time of his death.
