Dr. Albert Josiah Read, was born in Pawtucket, R. I., July 8, 1863, the son of Joshua Read, Jr., and Lydia C. (Atwood) Read.
He prepared at Pawtucket High School and South Lancaster, Mass., Academy, He then was admitted to Brown University. In his Sophomore year he left to go to Polynesia as a missionary, where he remained six years. Upon returning to the States he entered New York University and Bellevue Medical College, from which he received his M. D. in 1899.
He and Harriet Osborn Warren, were married in Acushnet, Mass., on 14 Sep 1890. His first son, Samuel M Read, was born to this marriage on 23 May, 1900. Harriet passed away 28 May 1900. He then married His second wife Ella Van Louise Butler, in Battle Creek, Michigan, on 11 Dec 1901. She passed away Aug. 18, 1910. Each of these marriages lasted about nine years.
He taught at the American Medical Missionary College, Chicago, for several years and then became superintendent of the Philadelphia Institute of Physiologic Therapeutics. In 1910 he went to Battle Creek, Mich., where he occupied several offices in health and training schools. He was field secretary of the American Race Betterment Association, 1913-14, and medical director of the Southern Sociological Congress, 1915-16.
During World War I he was a Captain, Medical Corps, USA, and served eight months overseas, coming home with the rank of major. After returning from the war, he married a third time to army nurse, Dana B. Weitzel, in Detroit, Mich. on Christmas Day, 1920, which was also Dana's 37th birthday. His second son, Albert James Read, was born in 1927 from this marriage. He then passed away about nine years after getting married.
For the last six years of his life, he was a lecturer and diagnostician with the New York State Department of Health. He had the reputation of being a valuable field lecturer. He belonged to the American Public Health Association and other organizations.
His sister, Mrs. Isa Read Thayer , wrote and published a biography of him, "Albert Josiah Read, M.D.: a biographical memoir", published by the American Historical Society, in 1932
