Francis Markoe Cummins
Birth: Jun. 29, 1822
Orange County
New York, USA
Death: Mar. 26, 1884
Orange County

Civil War Union Army Officer. A native New Yorker, he was a resident of Muscatine County, Iowa when the Civil War started. A veteran of the Mexican War (having served as a Captain in the 10th United States Infantry), he joined the Union war effort barely a month after the bombardment of Fort Sumter, being commissioned as Captain and commander of Company A, 1st Iowa Volunteer Infantry on May 14, 1861. The unit, a three-month enlistment regiment, served until it's muster out on August 21, 1861, having participated in the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri (and sustaining 17 percent casualties). On the 30th of that month, Francis M. Cummins was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 6th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He served with the unit up until the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. In that battle, which the 6th Iowa fought hard and sustained numerous casualties, Francis Cummins performance was found lacking. He was convicted in a court-martial of having been intoxicated in the early part of the action, and was utterly unfit to perform any duty", He was dismissed on May 20, 1862 (the regiment's Major, John Murray Corse, would be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and finish the war as a Brevet Major General). Heading to his native New York, he was giving another commission on August 16, 1862, this time as Lieutenant Colonel of the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry. He served in this capacity with the unit (which was nicknamed the "Orange Blossoms", due to the majority of the regiment being from Orange County, New York) through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and the July 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1862) he was wounded in the thigh by piece of an artillery shell, and later in the day assumed command of the regiment when it's Colonel, Augustus Van Horne Ellis, was killed in action in the area known as the "Triangle Field" near the Rose Woods. Francis Cummins was promoted to Colonel to fill the vacancy caused by Colonel Ellis' death, and his commission was backdated to July 2. He led the regiment in the Fall 1863 Mine Run Campaign, and in the opening staged of the Spring 1864 Overland Campaign. On May 6, 1864, during the Battle of the Wilderness, he was shot in the right leg, causing a wound that would necessitate a long convalescence, and eventually his honorably discharge due to disability on September 19, 1864. After the war he resided in Orange County, New York, living quietly as a miller and farmer, and passed away in Goshen, New York in 1884. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
