History of the Sobula Family
This family history has its beginnings in a small village in the southern part of Poland. Our ancestors came from the mountain region and are referred to as "Gorale" of "Hill" people. (Near border of Slavakia)
Grandmother Mary Kaperda and grandfather Joseph Sobula raised their children in the village of Pyzowka (Nowy Targ, Malopolski, Poland). The had 9 children.
Mary Kaperda Soblua died at the age of 51, leaving her husband Joseph to raise the remaining 4 children at home. Joseph lived to be 84 and died in 1953.
Five of the nine children of Mary and Joseph Sobula came to America to better their lives.
- Julia left her home and family in Poland as a teenager, never to return to her native land.
- Katie came to America two years after Julie, lived here for nine years, married in America and returned to Poland in 1921 at the request of her husband.
- Victoria also came to America, married and raised a family and returned to Poland for a visit in 1969 at the age of 65. She found out that some things never change… "You can't go back". America was her home and she could hardly wait to return.
- Helen came to America in 1965 at the age of 59 to live with her recently widowed sister, Victoria. She also returned to Poland in 1981 after suffering a slight stroke. She lived with her son and his family for a year and a half before she returned to America in 1982.
Those of us who are native born Americans have much to be thankful for…. hard working ancestors, courageous mothers, a proud heritage and a free world to raise our children in.
