Never married.
Died of pneumonia brought on by influenza while in Marine Corps training at Mare Island Naval Base, Vallejo, California.
His WWI Draft registration of September 12, 1918, in Portland states he had been working as a water tender on the Dredge Chinook in Astoria, Oregon. His uncle, Isaac Newton Shatto, lived in Portland and a number of his sons were marine engineers, perhaps providing an introduction to working on the Chinook. His registration gives his birth date as June 14, 1900, at odds with other records and his obit. Seems he was eager to present himself as a bit older to get into the Marine Corps.
Marine Corps records for Frances E.W. Shatto state he enlisted December 6, 1918, in Portland Oregon. Arrived Mare Island December 8th. Was in sick bay from Dec. 16-21 and died at 2:27 pm, December 22, 1918, in Naval Hospital, Mare Island, Vallejo, CA Cause of death: "Influenza". Excellent character. Buried Santa Rosa, Cal.; no will found among his effects.
