Colonel Jesse W. Patty, born in 1806, left his Chester District, South Carolina, home when twelve years of age and traveled on horseback to Sheffield, Alabama, securing employment on a farm at $8 a month. His salary grew until at 18 years of age he became overseer and drew $500 a year.
In 1836, he entered the service of the United States for the Seminole War, after which he returned to Sheffield and engaged in the mercantile business until he was forced to pay a note which he had signed for a friend. This took all his resources and about 1840 he moved to Mississippi, made a new start, and in a short time became a prosperous farmer in Winston County. He married Sarah Pettigrew and raised a family of nine boys and three girls.
