Gwendolyn A. “Dixie” Henderson Buck
1931 - 2013

Gwendolyn A. "Dixie" Buck, 81, of Florence, Montana, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, surrounded by her family. She was born on Sept. 15,1931, in Darby to Floyd and Gladys (Thompson) Henderson. Her father established the nickname "Dixie" that she went by all her life.

As a young girl, she lived with her family in Darby. They later moved to Missoula where she attended Missoula County High School.

Dixie treasured her memories of growing up in Darby and spoke of them often. She was a Bitterroot girl all her life, regardless of her actual location, and was intensely proud of being a descendant of pioneers that homesteaded in the Bitterroot Valley in the 1800s. Her grandfather's home, located up Rye Creek, was spoken of fondly where she recalled large family gatherings. The home was later moved down into Darby and turned into the museum.

Dixie was an avid reader with much knowledge. She often was consulted by family and friends for help, especially when it came to children. She was active in bridge club, PTA, den mother, Girl Scout leader and score keeper of countless little league games of "global significance."

She loved and lived life to its fullest. She enjoyed the cabin on Flathead Lake and entertained many family and friends with enthusiasm. A faithful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend she was always willing to help or cook up one of her many special dishes. Her genteel nature has left a footprint on all of our lives.

The mother of five children, her eldest son Gary was the product of her marriage to the late Cal Smith of Dixon. It was in 1954, while working at the Florence Hotel, that she met John "Skip" Buck. Their workplace romance blossomed and endured for 56 years. Later, their son Bob was born, then their girls LeAnne and Tami soon after. Five years later, the family became complete with the arrival of T.J.

She and Skip moved out to Silverdale, Wash., on the Olympic Peninsula in the late 1980s.They enjoyed getting away on weekends and visiting many of the quaint towns and the islands in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They worked in property management and met many interesting people from all over the world.

In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband to Hawaii, Mexico and many points in between. They eventually became "snowbirds," wintering in Scottsdale, Ariz., and coming back to Montana for the summers. One of her special joys was driving her convertible.

Her grandchildren, Chelle and Jefferson, and great-granddaughter Rylie were the loves of her life. She had a very special relationship with each of them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, "Skip" Buck; her son, Robert "Bob" Buck; and her sisters, Lila Kamura and Helen MacIntyre.

She is survived by her children, Gary, LeAnne, Tami (Christopher) and TJ; grandchildren, Chelle and Jefferson; great-granddaughter, Rylie; brothers and sisters-in- law, Jim and Karen Buck and Thomas and Marybeth Buck; nephew, Terry (Delaine) Clark; and many other nieces and nephews.

She is now with those who have patiently, but eagerly awaited her arrival.

The family would like to thank Aspen Hospice of Stevensville for their help and support. There will be a celebration of life announced at a later date when the family are all able to attend.
