Mary E. Backus, 87, of Jeannette, died Monday, June 13, 2011, in Wellspring at Juniper Village, North Huntingdon. She was born Dec. 26, 1923, in West Virginia, a daughter of the late Steven Radocay and Anna (Blahout) Kubicek Radocay. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Jeannette and its Rosary Altar Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, soul mate and who she could not live without, William "Bill" Backus, on May 20, 2011; and her siblings, Alec, Emma, Albert, Louise, Ann, Frank, Amelia, Vince, Joe and Helen. She is survived by her daughters, Connie Smith and her husband, Tom, of Jeannette, Carol Brisbane and her husband, Gene, of Greensburg, and Mary Anne Craig and her husband, Rick, of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren, Bill and Gretchen Smith, of North Huntingdon, Brian and Jenn Smith, of Jeannette, Kelli Brisbane and her fiance, Dashiel Harster, of New York, Mindy and DJ Vickers, of Greensburg, Shawn Brisbane, of Greensburg, Adam Craig and his fiancee, Liz Kloos, of Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley Craig and Taylor Spellins, of South Carolina; seven great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Kylie and Noah Smith, Halle, Jace and Camden Vickers and Luke Harster; a special niece, Margaret Casale, of Greensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church with Father Leon Hont, OSB, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Laurel Mountain Chapter, 1011 Old Salem Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.
