Prominent Farmer Drowned
Death of Mr. Joe Henry Collier in the Towaliga River- Was With Fishing Party
Forsyth, GA., May 26- Mr. Joe Henry Collier, a prominent farmer and public ginner, residing in the northern section of this county, was drowned this morning in the Towaliga River, near High Falls. Mr. Collier, together with several gentlemen, went near High Falls to spend today pleasantly fishing. After the party had been fishing for some time, Mr. Collier, who was in the river assisting the party of fishermen by driving the fish towards the nets, very suddenly came to a basin in the river about fifteen feet deep, at Child's Bend. Neither he nor anyone else present knew exactly where the basin was, though they had heard of the place before. When Mr. Collier came to it he slipped in and was drowned before anyone came to his assistance. His body was recovered in about five minutes after sinking for the last time. Every effort was made to revive him, but to no avail. He could not swim.
This basin seems to be a very fatal place, as there have been several men drowned in it.
Mr. Collier was about 35 years old and leaves a widow and several children to mourn his death, and also many relatives and friends.
As published in the Macon Telegraph, May 26,1904.
NOTE: The 1910 census refers to Joe Collier as Joseph, however most other documents list his name as Joe. It is conceivable that his birth name was Joseph, but he was referred most often as Joe.
