Devoted husband of Alice Beatty and beloved father of Marilynn, Kenneth, Andrew, and Dennis. Nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Merchant Marine ship's master, avid fisherman and gardener, craftsman, linguist, ham radio operator (W2RNV), enjoyed a good joke and a challenging crossword puzzle.

During WWII, his ship was in a convoy of supply ships. Before arriving at their overseas destination, every ship except his was sunk by a German U-boat. He was a veteran also of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Grave inscription: "Home is the sailor, home from the sea"
