John immigrated into New York in 1868, he was born Johan Erik Johannson in Hogsby, Sweden and changed his name when he came to the US

from his obit:

John Tillman was born in Sweden, Dec. 20th, 1839, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paser, Thursday, February 22, at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 2 days. He was united in marriage to Nellie Trobeck in 1871, to which three children were born, two of whom are living. He came from Sweden to Illinois, and to Nebraska in 1890, where he lived on a farm til 1902, then moved to Wahoo, and resided there till the death of his wife in 1908. After that time he spent some time in Superior, Weston and Wahoo, Nebr. There is to mourn his death, one son, and one daughter, one granddaughter, two sisters and two brothers. The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the house with services at the M. E. Church and burial in the Sunrise Cemetery at Wahoo. The deceased was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Wahoo, who had charge of the funeral.
