On 16 March 1888, Frederick A. and Sarah C. Dersham of Palmyra Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, sold 40 acres of land to John and his brother, Isaiah B. Hilkert, for $2,100.00. Both brothers were listed as residents of Derry Township, Montour County, Pennsylvania, at the time. The tract was the west half of the Eastern half of the Northwest Quarter of Section No. 12, Township 7 south of Range 4E. It is known that John did not permanently relocate until 1889 because his daughter, Grace, was born in Pennsylvania. Sometime between 1889 and 1893, John and his family moved to Palmyra Township, Lenawee County. John died 11 December
1934 at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Scull, Pearl Street, Blissfield. He died of pneumonia after an illness of several weeks; he was 78 years, 5 months, and 29 days old.
