Washington McNutt was the son of George W McNutt and Sarah Sally Rollins. Washington was born in Stephenson Co., IL where his father had homesteaded 160 acres just east of McConnell. His father passed away weeks before Washington was born.
On 10 March 1864 he married his 1st cousin Caroline McNutt in Allakamee County, IA. The next month he began service as a Private in Company B of the 1st Iowa Calvary. In November of 1864 his first son Oscar was born. He served until Feb. 1866 when he was mustered out of the service in Austin TX after which he returned to his family in Allakamee.
In 1867 he followed his Uncle/Father-in-law and his cousins to Pawnee County, Nebraska where he homesteaded 160 acres of land and built two houses and cultivated 50 acres of land.
In 1870 His daughter Ella was born in Pawnee Co.
By 1878 he had returned to his birth place in Stephenson Co. IL where his son Melvin was born.
In 1881 he again headed west, this time to Cape Horn in Skamania County, WA. It was here that Caroline passed away in September of 1896.
On 14 November 1897 he married Martha Creighton in Camas, Clark Co., WA. He lived there and in Portland, OR and worked as a blacksmith. By 1910 he had moved to Ashland in Jackson Co., OR.
In January of 1906 he was in poor health and was admitted to the Pacific Branch of the Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Sawtelle, CA. and was released in December of 1907. He was admitted again in November of 1908 and released in May of 1909.
In 1910 he was living near the Home in Cahuenga, CA and was a Furniture Merchant.
He died 25 April 1918 at the Home. Cause of death was carcinoma of the stomach.
