Dr. Robert W. Needham, 51 years of age, departed this life suddenly Thursday, Febuary 8, 1973 at the Animal Hospital on East First Street Campbellsville, Ky. Dr. Needham was a native of Cumberland County, Ky., where he was born April 17, 1921. He had resided in Campbellsville since 1952.

Dr. Needham was one of two children born to Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Needham. His brother, Woodson, preceded him in death earlier in life on February 2, 1961. His father also preceded him in death.

On September 21, 1945, he was united in marriage to Mary Frances Russell and they became the parents of one daughter, Sally Needham. Besides his wife and daughter, Dr. Needham is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Lyda D. Needham of Cumberland County, Ky.; one aunt, Mrs. A.E. Crow Sr. of Glasgow, Ky., and one uncle, Mr. R.H. Davis of Louisville, Ky.

Dr. Needham professed faither in Christ early in life and had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for many years. Dr. Needham attended the University of Kentucky Agriculture School and won a Danforth Scholarship as a freshman. He graduated from Auburn University in Alabama with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1952 after 39 months of active duty in the Air Force. Dr. Neeham held memberships in the honorary fraternities Phi Zeta and Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Zeta social-professional fraternities Omega Tau Sigma and Alpha Gamma Rho, AVMA and KVMA.

He was appointed as a member of the Auburn Advisory Alumni council of the School of Veterinary Medicing in November, 1972.

Dr. Needham began practice in Campbellsville in 1952 and joined in partnership with Dr. Joe Turpin in the Animal Clinic in 1958.

Dr. Needham was president of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association in 1965, and a delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association that same year. He was also a member to the Governor's Commission on Agriculture in 1965. He was also a member of the Campbellsville-Taylor County Chamber of Commerce, Taylor County Livestock Improvement Association, and Audubon Society.

Dr. Needham was the first president of the Kentucky Simmental (cattle) Association and one of the first breeders of the important Simmental in the nation. He was the immediate past president and member of the board of directors of the Ky. Simmental Association. He was also president of the local Allied Simmental Enterprises, Inc.

A high point of Dr. Needham's career was achieved last October when he wa named Veterinarian of the Year by the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association.

Funeral services were conducted at the Lyon Funeral Home Chapel Sunday, February 11, 1973 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Fred Reed and Rev. John Hays were in charge of the service. Burial was in Brookside Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Carl Watson, Polk Ewing, Tom Asher, Russell Williams, Harlan Williams and W.E. Moody. Honorary pallbearers were: Paul Bennett, Gilbert Shipp, Joe R. Barbee, Mark Chandler, Turney Harding, Tommy Noe, Oscar Shipp, Joe L. Barbee, Dennis Smith and Joe Miller. Lyon Funeral Home was in charge of the services.
