1934 - Following item from "Visalia Times Delta" newspaper of Visalia, Tulare Co., CA dated Thursday, April 12, 1934:

Aged Man Hit And Killed By Park Motorist

Driver Unable To Avoid Striking Aged Three Rivers Man

Henry DeLong, 86, well-known resident of the Three Rivers district, was fatally injured shortly before 7 o'clock last night when he was struck by an automobile driven by D. D. Fields, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, near the Dr. Nice place on Three Rivers highway.

Apparently confused by the lights, the aged man cut across the highway directly in the path of the Fields car. Fields swung to the left to avoid hitting DeLong, but was unsuccessful. Immediately after the accident, Fields called Ash Mountain and a government ambulance took the victim to the Sequoia hospital at Woodlake, where he died a few minutes later.

The car driven by Fields was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Fields of Los Angeles and their daughter, Miss Elsie Fields, and Mrs. C. A. Fields of Salt Lake City, mother of the two men. The easterners were visiting in California, and spent yesterday afternoon visiting in Sequoia National Park,. They were returning to the south when the accident occurred.

Corner (sic) J. M. Hadley investigated the accident and announced that an inquest was to be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon.

DeLong a native of Iowa, was well known in the Three Rivers district, where he had resided for a number of years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth DeLong of Three Rivers and a nephew, Henry Ewing of Exeter. He was a stepfather of Mrs. Byron Allen of this district.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Hadley parlors in Exeter.

Thank you,
Roy (my note: V4)

In addition to the Jefferson Bee article of 1 Feb 1873; Shortly after the fire at Alexander Cairns home ( my paternal 2nd great-grandfather ), Mr. DeLong fled to Jefferson, IA and demanded protective custody to Sheriff Watts as a mob assembled demanding his release to them. Sheriff met them at the door of the jail with a 10 gauge shotgun denying his release. Instead, due to lack of evidence, Watts placed DeLong on the morning train heading back to Illinois.

Then, on Friday, Mar 7, 1873 the Jefferson Bee reports: The rumor was current on Sat. that DeLong of odorous memory connected to the Cairns holocaust, met with an accident in Illinois, his neck becoming entangled with a rope, and the rope refused to break, his neck didn't. We are unchristian enough to not shed a tear at this news; on the contrary if it ain't true we shall feel disappointed. Mrs. DeLong has sued for a divorce which of course will be granted !

So, it turns out, the Scallywag and "alleged" murderer Henry DeLong evidently faked his own death by lynching in Illinois and fled to California living to the ripe old age of 86 ! I often wonder if the man had any remorse. Chris E. Cairns 8/7/2021
