| Birth: | Feb. 22, 1826 Patrick County Virginia, USA | | Death: | Aug. 20, 1897 Christiansburg Montgomery County Virginia, USA |  CSA Congressman. Born in Patrick County, Virginia, he graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1846 and was admitted to the bar in 1848. He served in the Virginia Legislature from 1853 to 1854. During the Civil War, he represented Virginia in the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States of America in Montgomery, Alabama in 1861, and represented Virginia in the first and second Confederate Congress, serving from 1862 to 1865. Following the Civil War he served as a justice on the Virginia Supreme Court from 1870 to 1882. In 1884 he was a democratic presidential elector. Also from 1884 – 1886 he served as a Virginia Commissioner charged with revising the Statues of the Commonwealth. (bio by: S.G. Thompson)
