He played for several teams form 1932-1945, including the St. Louis Browns (now Orioles), Boston Bees (Braves) Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. The highlight of his career was being National League batting champ at Pittsburgh with a 0.355 average in 1940, Joe DiMaggio led the American league was a 0.352 that year. He also starred in a now famous game in which he got the hit that broke up Johhny Vander-Meer's attempt for a third consecutive non-hitter (no-one else has two).
