Zachariah Sanford owned the famous Inn in Hartford, where legend has it, at a special court assembly held in the upper rooms of the tavern, the lights were suddenly extinguished and the Connecticut Charter "was carried off by Capt. Wadsworth" " and hidden in the Charter Oak Tree" This tavern was originally owned by Mr. Sandford's Grandfather. Jeremy Adams. When Mr. Sandford purchased it in 1685 he enlarged it and later made his son-in-law Jonathan Bunce a co-owner. At this period it was known as the "Black Horse Tavern". Then in 1757 Samuel Flagg, a son-in-law of Jonathan Bunce became its owner
