Birth: May 12, 1842
Bedford County
Tennessee, USA
Death: Aug. 10, 1915
Hickman County
Kentucky, USA

Abel Davis was born May 12, 1842 in Bedford County, Tennessee, the fourth son of Goodrum Davis and Henrietta Lee Smith Pryor.

Raised on a farm in a very large family, Abel Davis had at least fourteen known siblings. Brothers; Archibald Swepson, William Lytle, John Louis, Robert Young, Valentine Sublett, Earnest, Goodrum, Job and sisters; Alabama Wade, Sarah Louisiana Marsh, Mary Margaret Smith and Jane Washington Lacy.

Abel Davis was a very intelligent, kind and respected man by most accounts. His younger brother Valentine Davis wrote about him in great detail in a letter. He said "In his boyhood days, Abel was not much inclined to work, but grew out of that and became one of the most industrious men in the family. He had a kind disposition, got along well with his brothers and sisters. A natural mechanic, quick in figures, a good reader, but a poor scribe. Able Davis was a good man, liked by everybody that knew him. He was strictly honest and straight in his dealings with everybody. He thought lots of his brothers and was always ready to lend a helping hand. "

Early Life
As a young man, Abel had a desire to leave home. He did make at least one attempt that failed early after his father him brought him back. Abel turned eighteen just a year before the American Civil War commenced. He enlisted in the Confederate Army and was camped mostly in Camp Trousdale Camp Trousdale . His service lasted until February 1865. He then returned home.

Upon his arrival home in Bedford County he quickly went to work as a farmer and carpenter. Abel experienced success in growing and selling hay and later cotton. He accumulated assets along the way.

Marriage and Children
On January 18, 1866 in Bedford County, Abel Davis married Sarah Elizabeth Smith. The couple started a family and already had four children within the first four years of marriage. Despite all of Abel's success and blessings, his family was plagued with several deaths. He outlived many of his children. Disease, illness and even a suicide consumed his first five.

In the early 1870's Abel sold what he had accumulated and moved the family to Hickman County, Kentucky. He bought and paid cash for forty acres of good land there. He remained a resident in Kentucky for 35 years. In the summer of 1892 Abel's wife died.

On November 13, 1895, Abel remarried to Sallie Ann Halstead. The couple had seven children together. Five sons; Sam, William "Swep", Theodore and Lee Abel and two daughters; Illa Lee Davis and Ira "Bonnie" Moore.

Abel Davis died on August 10, 1915 at the age of 73 years, 2 months and 28 days. In spite of all his misfortunes he prospered, and when he died, left his family in good circumstances.
