Though she wrote 4 novels and 30 plays, Betty Smith is remembered most for her novel "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn." She was born Elizabeth Lillian Wehnerin the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, New York. She would base A Tree Grows In Brooklyn loosely on her life when she was growing up in a tenement housing area there. After the tree in the project's courtyard was cut down in her youth she vowed to plant a tree everywhere she lived. She died in Shelton, Connecticut, of pneumonia on January 17, 1972, and was buried in her adopted home town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. (bio by: Lisa)
