BANGOR, Wis. - Franklin S. Springer, 72, of Bangor, Wis., passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, Wis.
He was born February 12, 1940, in Winona, Minn., to Roman and Rose (Klosowski) Springer. Frank proudly served 22 years in the United States Navy, retiring in 1980. He then worked 20 years in the Army Civil Service, primarily at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Ill., retiring in 2002. Frank always said his naval career was largely marked by the places he lived and where his children were born. He took great pride in having 35 years of sobriety. Frank was an active member of NCVA (Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association), a cancer survivor and the family genealogist. He took extra joy in making apple pies and turnovers for his friends and family. Frank was a lifelong scavenger of recyclables and loved his cats almost as much as he loved his children. He was a general "jack of all trades," and nothing was safe from him if he had a paintbrush in his hand.
Frank is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lucy (Lauermann); six children, Grace (Dan) Faas of Onalaska, Wis., Gale of Moline, Ill., Frank, Jr., (Teresa) of Wilton, Wis., Laura of La Crosse, Margaret "Peg" (David) Steele of Rock Island, Ill., and Jerome of La Crosse; three grandchildren, Danny K. Faas and Ethan R. and Olivia J. Smith; four step-grandchildren, Trish, Liz, Lonnie and Tiffani; two step-great-grandchildren, Kaylyn and Mason; two honorary granddaughters, Amanda Gill and Kristen McKee; three brothers, Henry (Beth), Thomas (Nancy) and John (Joyce); one sister, Barbara Perkins; and countless nieces and nephews.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, James, Robert, Donald, Charles and Gerald; five sisters, Marion, Patricia, Rosalie, Theresa and Joan; and his daughter, Barbara Jean.
