A member wrote to me why the parents names are spelled differently. Here is what she says. "The way she told the story to me of why the mother is listed as St. Clair and the father Sinclair is follows: When the Sinclair Oil Scandal started part of the family went back to the original name St. Clair and part of the family kept the name Sinclair. When the father died the Sinclair group paid for his tombstone and put Sinclair on it. When the mother died the St. Clair group paid for her tombstone and put St. Clair on it. On 27 February 1878 Wayman Sinclair received a Presidential Pardon from Rutherford B. Hayes for "illicit distilling". He was a miller and the neighbors asked for him to be released. He was first allowed to be home during the week and go to prison on weekends, but then he was given the pardon. He had walked from his home near Plum Point, Adair County, Kentucky to the prison in Hodgenville for some time before that. This pardon was in the hands of Docia Mae Skaggs the last time I heard about it. According to a story told by Anne Sinclair Crabtree to the family, her father was caught because when the revenuers came to check the mill, geese were getting drunk drinking from a stream on the property. When the men followed the stream they found the Sinclair still.
