Mr. Howell was born to Lewis D. Howell, Sr. and Dovie Ritchie Howell. He recieved a BS degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and a MBA degree from Mississippi State University.
Lt. Colonel Howell enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. After 3 years of service in the Navy, he was honorably discharged and entered college. After completing his academic education he was commissioned in the U.S. Army where he completed his 20 years of military service. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Lt. Colonel Howell was a computer softwear engineer and developed and implemented computer systems for the U.S. Army. After he retired from the Army, he developed and implemented computer systems at Auburn University, the University of Miami and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Kennedy Space Center, Florida.
Duty, Honor, Country and Family values are the principles and standards that guided him throughout his life and his military service. Among the many medals, decorations and awards are the Bronze Star, 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Army Commendation Medals, The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, The Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and The Vietnam Staff Service Medal.
He was preceded in death by his heart and soul wife, Lavonna Roberts Howell, formerly of Pittsburg, Texas. They were married for 48 years and have 4 children. Other family preceding in death are his parents and siblings Elizabeth Hilton, Sarah Martin, Lewis David Howell, Jr. and Lowery Howell.
Survivors include 3 daughters; Charlotte Howell Rutherford of Houston, Tx., Karen Howell Hankinson & husband Patrick of St. Petersburg, Catherine Howell Revels & husband, Chris of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a son, Lawrence Carey Howell, Jr. & his wife, Rose of Austin, Tx.
